Context
The previous mapping software, exclusive to Windows users, necessitated the installation of an extra publisher and was confined to local use. To enhance accessibility, the CEO chose to transition to a cloud-based SaaS platform, allowing for self-service without the need for a GIS (Geographic Information System) expert. This transition demands a full overhaul of the software’s user experience.
Problem
- The previous platform’s user interface was highly technical and intricate, tailored exclusively for GIS experts.
- The software was limited to independent work only.
- Users were unable to share their map data insights with others.
Solution
1. Re-designed the entire software UI
1) Sign up/login page

5) Created map edit mode
Viewers can freely change the map layout. Only when the edit mode is on, the changes will be saved. Convenient for both map creators and viewers.
6) Add data
OLD
NEW – Enable users to add data easily in different ways.
7) Update map styles
OLD – Limited styles and map symbols
NEW – Large library of symbols and simplified style options
2. Real-time data updates empower users to collaborate on a map.
3. Created a Story panel and allowed users to make a map presentation (similar to PowerPoint).
Outcomes
- The user interface has become significantly more navigable, leading to a rise in trial sign-ups from both GIS and non-GIS users.
- Members of large company teams can collaborate with greater ease and ensure they stay updated on any changes made by their colleagues.
- Customers across various sectors can create interactive map presentations tailored to their specific target audiences.
Key learnings
- Developed a fresh SaaS application entirely from the ground up, and gleaned valuable understanding throughout the journey, encompassing registration, subscription to a plan, profile updates, and data upload for visualization on a map.
- Found satisfaction in simplifying the user interface of a sophisticated software application.
- Acquired expertise in engaging with stakeholders and developers within an agile setting to bring the product to fruition and iteratively enhance it.
